Alanna,
I have read every blog of this adventure and truly enjoyed the ride. I don't know how many responses you received but I am sure others heard of this trip even if they didn't make contact with you. Good luck on the results of your project, whether a book or film. I will be curious to learn the ending. I am a BMW motorcycle rider but have become hooked on the idea of obtaining a Ural!

Dear Mike and Alanna

What a great web site, It’s a shame we did not bump into each other on your trip, We have just completed a similar adventure on our old ish BMW, please see www.1a-2j.co.uk.

We are newly weds too.... but at the other end of the age range. Even with this difference we can see all kinds of parallels from your web site and we have both loved reading it. Sandra and I have survived the journey as indeed did the marriage, in fact I would say we are stronger then ever. Coming home we have all kinds of withdrawal symptoms which was a great shock to both of us, but we are slowly adjusting whilst planning the next big trip.

Thanks for a great web site we really enjoyed reading it.

Take great care

Excellent blog, excellent live-story, and you seem to be an excellent couple. Don't be too scientifical, too rigid in your marriage. You have shown to many people how to live in couple 24/7 for more than 200 days!!!! . You've experienced a lot of adventures and misadventures than many people want to experience in their whole life. You should be proud, not many people have lived and made a trip like this. I envy you (in a good way of course). I have a relationship with a girl for more than 4 years and we are planning marriage. You've shown me many things about marriage that I'll put in practice in a close future.
Congrats and hope to know more about you both in the future.

Greetings from Mexico

Congratulations on making it all the down south Mike and Alanna!

Fantastic journey... and on a Ural Sidecar, don't fret, everything works out in the end. I am sad to hear you have to part with your trusty steed and I am sure your endeavors in the future will be as courageous as you both have been on your travels through North, Central and South America.

You have both accomplished what others dream about.

Myself, still stuck in Peru, dealing with SUNAT,

I disembarked the 12th (Antarctica-on-a-budget), spent two days alternately sleeping and drinking with shipboard friends, then rode off into the blowing snow and sleet the 14th. I trust our paths will cross elsewhere....somewhere, sometime. But what I really want to know is how you got that ungainly Russian machine past the posts which surround the sign at the end of the road in the national park to take that photo. I couldn't even manage my KLR with its extra-wide panniers.

I'll check back in March for the results, but in the meantime I'll caution you that the designers of those personality and relationship tests don't really know much about individual cases anyway; they're all about statistical probabilities. That includes your heroic Washington researchers as much as anyone else you might name. Who would know better than I, disprover of any and all generalizations?

Safe journeys!

Mark

And if ya'll ever make back to the San Francisco Bay Area, I'll be insulted if you don't let me put you up for a few days.

Your blog has been one of the best I've ever read. You both should be proud. I'll miss it.

Best of luck!

Wow, I think it would be hard to let the Ural go. I thought maybe storing it there and ride it back up the States, Haha!

It is going to another traveler, though. Another journey? Another travel diary?

I can not believe you sold the bike???? That vehicle carried you both through thick and thin and you cast it aside like a piece of garbage!
I am sure you will regret it for the rest of your lives.

Shame! Shame! Shame!

Well done you two on the trip of a lifetime. Your record of the trip has been both humerous and inspiring and I hope it inspires you to do more motorcycle and sidecar trips. I look forward to reading the book/ watching the DVD of the trip. Keep us informed.

My wife and I hope there is a post script to your adventure. How will you get home? What is to happen to your trusty Russian stead? What is happening to get your story on television or movie? I loved the ride! P. S. I signed for a three day sidecar motorcycle class in Oregon.

I am full of admiration for what you have achieved. It will be with you for the rest of your lives. Despite having circumnavigated South America all those years ago, I only saw various seaports, coupled with the odd few days up country. Peanuts compared with your experience. Many, many congratulations.

from the top, aaaaaaaaaaall the way down. You are the only people I know who need a map of the whole gigantic world to show what they got up on their travels.

amazing, amazing, amazing.

can't even imagine what sort of emotional whirlwind you must be going through right now, but do not despair - there's many many many people back in Blighty who will make for at least as good a conversational companion as the Russian.

looking forward to having you back!

Wow! You really made it! Many congratulations on the grand journey!

It seems so very long ago, your beginning here in Anchorage. I was at Mickey's garage today and we talked of you and your travels. I am still wondering how you will be able to return to the normal life...

Now I have to go get caught up with the blog.

Many regards!

If you'd hurry up and get south you'd have a lot more daylight to play with when bad roads screw up careful scheduling. I took off my sunglasses at 10 PM today, rode in full light until 11:00, arrived near midnight.

Of course, I'll pay for it tomorrow....

Are you still planning on Ushuaia? The days are actually getting shorter here, and the evenings are getting a bit chilly. I just booked an Antarctica trip, so I'll be gone for three weeks, returning mid-Feb. Might see you then, more or less.

enjoy,

Alanna and Michael, (and Alex if he is still riding with you guys) Hoy he llegado a mi casa despues de haber roto mi amortiguador trasero en Catamarca...

PD. I see that you had a little flavor of the authentic TIA in the customs...!!!
Hope to see you soon!!!

I love that the trademark Clearlan kiss is demanded by every TV show you go on. Millions of people around the world now know what you look like when you snog. He he he....

(I'm a puerile idiot, obviously)

Oh noooo! Feeling a bit emotional about the old Ural beast - btw, have you named her yet? I think the bike is definitely a she - tempestuous, grumpy and sometimes a bit lippy, but in the end, you would not change her for the world.

I am no expert (your post above has increased my knowledge of engines infinitely, having started from a big fat zero) but I assume old that dirt and muck on your friend mechanic's hands after he opened the thingie up is not a good sign. Long live the first clutch.

Really good luck with getting things back on the road and PF 2010 guys!!!

So what altitude do you first recomend changing the jets?

What size jets did you bring with you?

Will you have to change again at higher altitude?

Haha see what you started!

Wayne! How amazing to hear from you, thank you. I agree that the site needs more Ural info for the boys. I have been nagging Mike for weeks to do a full update on the bike with blow-by-blow update of everything that has beset us so far (that said, it's the most reliable little part of our team!)
Very very happy holidays! Mike had a BMW F650 for years (it was how he wooed me!) which he finally had to sell, after 8 years, to help pay for this trip. Very very happy memories of Old Red.
Knowing that you are actually reading the blog, I will try and be better at updating it more regularly!
With love, Alanna x

Hello Mike and Alanna,

It's Christmas eve and just a quick note to wish you a Merry Christmas!

Thanks for your reply comment about the Ural repair items. Your rig has really done well, very few issues. The spokes breakage may have been the hardest to manage without a repair shop or without replacement. That would be near impossible to repair on the road.

So you are getting very close to Cusco and Machu Picchu. Will you be able to veer to the east to get there? You see I am now studying the South American sites for my trip, maybe next year?

You have gathered so much data. Will it take another year to to put it all together?

Take care and have a great holiday season and new year!

Regards,

Lester

I learned of your journey from the Ural dealer while attending a motorcycle show in San Mateo. I have a BMW F650 GS motorcycle and have an interest in the Ural so I thought I would learn of your journey and the performance of the Ural through your blog. I was born in Alaska and we lived in Anchorage for 28 years before we retired. I was hoping for more motorcylce adventure tales but came to love your descriptions of the people and the areas you visited on this trip. Each morning while enjoying our coffee together I update my wife on your characters interviewed or history/description of the area you pass through. We have been married for over 40 years and find a little of our relationship in many of the unions you describe. Keep up the good work and we look forward to a Public TV or BBC presentation of your work.

Happy Holidays, Wayne

Hello Lester!

And thanks so much for comment on the site! We are indeed doing more "people tourism" than "places tourism". The people here in Peru have been fabulous, and we have spent an unexpected amount of time in Lima trying to interview presidenttial candidate Keiko Fujimori.

We're on 25,000km, and the bike has behaved impeccably. In the whole journey, three things of note (which I have to write up in more detail at some point - but Alanna's writing the blog most of the time, while I'm handling the huge amount of data that we're collecting on the cameras). But I'll write them here to get things started. Maybe I'll post them separately after this.

Surprise Breakages for Lester:

Firstly the spline on the back wheel shattered in the Alvord desert in Oregon. I think it was defective, but at the same time I temporarily lent the bike to a fella who lent us his land-sail (like a windsurfer, but with three wheels) He took his wife round in a circle, came back to the start, and when he stopped he let the clutch out too quickly. The spline just went, and after some fannying about (the correct British term for not knowing what the hell had just happened) - I just changed the wheel around, and drove to Salt Lake City without a spare wheel! We finally got a replacement in Santa Clara with Ski Jablonski - the owner of Triquest motors - the biggest Ural dealer in the US. Ski serviced the bike superbly well - and helped with my weird request of building a tripod case at the back of the sidecar. He also put an extra side light on the car - because we were not clear enough at night time. After So.Cal (as they say down in Southern California) we headed for San Diego, where we kitted the bike out with Mace and some extra reflective strips in an attempt to prepare ourselves for Mexico. We avoided crossing into mexico for a while - so headed along the border to cross down at Nogales.

Our second problem was just outside of Tucson, near the town of Yuma. We were heading East at night time - just after deciding not to spend the night in Yuma. Yuma protested. It felt like a puncture, I stopped at the side of the road, and saw that the structure of the wheel had given up. Two of the spokes had snapped, and the tension had gone, such that again the only solution was to fit the spare wheel. By strange coincidence, we were only a couple of hours from a Ural dealer in Sierra Vista - where we met an elderly but wonderful mechanic Red Hartman. Who gave me his only spare wheel, that sat atop a brand new red Ural Tourist. We also did a service - timed the carbs, checked the spokes on the other wheels, and checked the alignment of the car.

Our final surprise was a puncture, again in the dark, just through the border of El Salvador. Aside from the half hour of wrestling with the Carter key (my fault for bending it out of shape right at the beginning). Many people had warned us of the crazy folk in El Salvador who would most likely rob us and kill us in the dark. In 15 mins, no less than 3 cars had stopped to ask if we were OK, and if they could help. We got the spare wheel on, and got to our destination without any difficulty. I took the tire to a Llanteria (tire shop) the next day, and for $2 they removed a metal staple that had caused the puncture and repaired the hole (which has lasted since Oaxaca).

So that's really it for problems (although I don't think the last one counts) So far. Even though we still have 8,000 kms to go, I'm feeling incredibly confident about the bike, it's just such a solid and "dependable friend" (as my friend Austin said in his song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toDc7jVd5jg )

Life after the journey will be so different, I'm trying hard not to think about it too much. But everything about it has been unforgettable, and so worth the time out and the money we have spent so far. You'll have a blast. Though start learning Spanish now - as we improve it's making a huge difference to our journey.

Keep on planning, it's half the journey! So glad you're following our updates, always good to hear someone's reading.

All the best,

Hello Mike and Alanna!

It's deep winter here in Alaska and I am doing some armchair Uraling, catching up on the travel blogs and forums.

You are making great progress in your southerly travels. I am glad to see that you are spending much time off the road to explore and get acquainted with the peoples and landscape, well done!

You are taking good care of the Ural and it seems it is taking good care of you. How many miles or kilometers now? Any surprise breakage that I missed? Someday Michael, you will have to tell me how you fixed the splines of the rear drive. Remember way back to that Utah desert? It seems so long ago.

Your travels have encouraged me to plan for a longer journey. I am going through the bike this winter, checking everything and preparing for next summer. I don't know yet if I will follow you south, or if I will head across Canada to Newfoundland, or both, hahaha!

Have you wondered what life will be once you complete this journey? Will you ever be able to settle in one spot? Will your eyes always be looking down the road, to the next horizon?

I am following along with great interest.

Your friend,

Lester

Hello Les Clear. I hope you are both well and your spirits and humour are holding up. I can't believe you have got to Peru. It's brilliant. Not that I ever thought you wouldn't, mind. I just don't think much. Peru has some rather fantasmic point breaks (points break?), I hear. Go tear em up, Les Clear. All is good here. Mrs K and Junior are magic. Look forward to seeing you. Bonne continuation. Alexander George.

I'm cheering for you! You'll be pleased to hear that it's more along the lines of reading the website regularly rather than wearing a miniskirt, shaking pom poms and flashing my pants while doing high kicks. But I never say never! Just a quick note to say that, while you might be feeling tired and jaded, there are plenty of us that enjoy the blog and really think it would make great television. I suppose the British preoccupation with misery works slightly against people trying to focus on love and all of the great things associated with it, but that's their (our) loss.
Love what you're doing, hope that you manage to rest a bit more and we genuinely can't wait to see you when you're back!
All my love,
Chimpy

Ha ha! I always love the thought of my exotic grandmother driving the best-selling car on the planet... so un-exotic. But I'm delighted that the Clear Roller is still going strong. Can't wait to get back to its East End "minicub minicub" ways.

What a grand, grand family story.

It's also great to know the heritage of The Corolla of Dreams. (Who sends her love, by the way. And who remains the very best thing to have happened in 2010...) I'll now feel like an international superstar every time I drive her and will make sure to tip my hat to your trilingual globe-trotting granny.

Thank you Granny (and Lanny) B.

Hi, kids...

This is such an impressive blog. I hope you are able to turn it into money. The writing is splendid. Years ago in Australia, I too had a music night, provided by oldster Irish folks just jamming in a little pub.

But the strongest memories of my motorcycle travels are of the agonies. So much fun to read about it, when it's happening to somebody ELSE.

Be safe as you can.

Lanny, I found that when Mike get's twitchingly stressed out, laughing and taking photographs of him seems to help (well it helped me anyway). Somewhere there are a number of bits of film of Mike having panic attacks between nY and Sf. I urge you to add to this collection.

I think the inspiration of your journey is beautiful. However, is your experience of Colombia so far about love? How come I read and read negative stuff about my country? Please, go and visit the national parks, the museums, the public transportation and more great things that Colombia has to offer. Have a safe ride and much love to both of you.

Dave! So pleased to have lured you into the wonderful world of Ural. It really is the most amazing bike for making friends - people wave, kids stare open-eyed, and 'blokes' ask us about it whenever we stop. Hope the new job is going great - great to hear from you - and keep us up to date with your Ural purchases! Alanna

Patty! How lovely of you to say so, thank you. I am indeed considering writing this as a book, if I do, you'll have earnt a free copy for reading all of this tosh before it's even printed...

Roberto Palacio's book is indeed intended to be a reply to Sin Tetas No Hay Paraiso - he really didn't like the title and wanted to change it throughout, but his publishers insisted. In fact, he was commissioned to write it as a sort of reply. My deep frustration is how poor my Spanish is, I'd love to get the nuances of his humour - I'm going to start plodding through it now (since I have run out of new copies of People magazine, I have nowhere else to hide)

I hope you, you warring but equally lovable dogs and Don are doing well - and that Dia de los Muertos was amazing. We managed to miss it pretty much entirely in Panama City. Grrr.

Love from Cali, some humiliating shots of me at the cosmetic surgeon to follow (no surgery!)

Hi guys,
I loved this bit! My first thought when I saw the title of the book was that it was a response to Sin Tetas No Hay Paraíso, a novel, and now a telenovela. I will definitely try to get my hands on it.

I can also recommend Labyrinth of Solitude by Octavio Paz. Most Mexicans I meet deny that it describes them, but it certainly explains a lot of the attitudes and assumptions I see around me. It's readily available in English. I think it might be applicable to most of Latin America.

I am really enjoying your blog, you should seriously think about doing a book as well as a documentary.

buen viaje,
Patty

Met you two at the Golden Acorn casino east of San Diego. I was the guy (bloke as you say) who was recently hired by the Border Patrol. I'm glad you are well and safe, and wish you the best on your journey. You peaked my interest in Ural, as I was just on the website doing some window shopping. It was an honor and pleasure meeting both of you!

Woo hoo! Greetings to the Mile End posse! In answer to your question, we do a strategic wash before any media appearance. The rest of the time, they are left to rot quietly. Mike tends to go 'porn star' with only his boxers underneath so his stink to high hell after a couple of days...
Again, my mantra for the trip is "I'm very lucky I'm very lucky I'm very lucky..."

Thanks to all three comments! Agreed that driving at night is horrible, yet somehow we have been repeated caught out. That night with the breakdown in El Salvador was by far our worst. It has also rained every afternoon - late in the afternoon, usually as darkness is falling. Water collects in the sidecar like a bathtub. Also, not ideal.

Lester, with the cotter pin, Mike is now trying inserting it from underneath (rather than above) so that when it comes to trying to unbend the pin, it is easier to see - rather than it becoming mangled immediately by the effort to remove it as it has done both times so far.

Sadly, Joe, there is no way that we can slow down. We have squandered our time up north and now need to get going hard to make it to Ushaia by Christmas. It's really frustrating, but we've made our beds...!

Thanks again for taking the time to comment. Patty, a big hello to Don and the dogs; Joe and Lester - happy biking! Alanna x

So far I have only traveled on a motorcycle in the US and Canada. Yet, I do not like riding at night for fear of a break down in an unknown area. In a foreign country and not speaking the language,... yikes!

A cotter pin, must be the rear wheel, the pusher. I am going to look that one over to see how it could be made easier to get to and remove. A spiffy tool perhaps? And I am getting those really thick tubes.

Hey, you guys be safe out there!

Following along,

Hi, guys,
Our experience in Mexico ( and, amazingly, in Colorado) is that it ALWAYS rains in the afternoon during the rainy season. If you could manage to get going earlier and plan on stopping in the afternoon until the rain stops, you might find it easier. The good thing about being in a sidecar is that you don't have to worry about the rear wheel throwing muddy water up your back.

Loved the interview in Guatemala, looking forward to your further adventures.

un abrazo,
Patty

Hi, guys...

Since the day we met, I've been afraid for you both. I've done a fair amount of motorcycle riding in foreign lands, and there were MANY times the romance didn't live up to the reality. And I was doing it on a modern dirt bike, not a Russian war machine.

Mike and Alanna...If there's any way you can adjust your schedule, it will really help if you can slow down the pace. Two days on, one day off, something like that.

And honey, I don't know about the bi-polar thing (hope not, bad news), but you two are in a situation that would make anyone a bit crazy. The good part? The toughest experiences always make the best stories.

GOOD LUCK! DO NOT drive at night.

Pret sandwiches: smoked salmon, every time. (Literally, every time I go there) Though I quite like that chicken and basil number. Am so delighted to be contributing to the daily gurmp 0 I hope you realise that Mike and both have our daily grump - him in the morning, me in the evening. His gets cold and distant and bats me away, I'm poisonous and snipey. Ah, the joys of the road. Thank you very very much for bothering to read the site - love you for it. And much love to the Mile End Massive and that little rat you share an abode with xx

Are you aware that these are known as "Notels" and best places to stay, your vehicle is hidden, the notel is clean, and some of them you can order room service delivered by a "dumb waiter" elevator type.
Best of all you can rent by the hour.
Many travelers search for these

Hello Uralites!

Brimming with envy and seething with jealousy at all the epic drama and adventure that unfolds between the driver's seat, the sidecar and beyond. Amazing. While I tuck into my third skinny late of the day and contemplate which Pret sandwich I am least bored with for lunch tomorrow, you are negotiating central american potholes and degreasing bike engines, all while keeping your foot firmly on the gas and changing into tropical wear. Damn.

Visiting your blog is now firmly on my quotidian menu of lunch-time browsing expeditions (yeah, I too am an explorer, taking my Google Chrome to wild places on the www) and is by far the biggest contributing factor to my being in a grump for the rest of each day. Thanks.

On a more positive note, thank you for all this amazing high-tech blogging business - it means that even though you are manymanymany miles away, for at least a few minutes every day, we are there with you. Live feed from the side car perhaps?

Hip hip hurrah to the Uralites!

...

Right, back to m'latte.

Hey Pedro,

We're heading into Guatemala today, but will be on email, or even Skype later on.

Our mexican cell will not work in guatemala I don't think, so maybe we call you from the hotel where we are staying? What's your number?

Could you email the link from el universal to us too - the journalist never sent it to us!

we're at mikeandalanna@gmail.com

thanks,

mike

Hello Mike and Alanna,

I have been in the grind of work and little play. The Ural Patrol is back on the road after some analysis and work with Mickey. The mystery noise comes and goes infrequently now, but is still hauntingly there, waiting for the long trip to return in force.

With the cold coming on and the rain here in Alaska, not many long trips. I need to get to the South and get some sun.

Display more Ural photos for us now armchair bikers that long for the journey. I am looking forward to your South American travels!

Take care and be safe.

I am following along.

Lester! We were wondering what had become of you, our most loyal commenter. Bike and sidecar doing surprisingly well! Mike changed the oil yesterday in the pouring rain, much to the amusement of a Mexican mechanic who did little to offer him any sheltered place to do it. By and large, it's going great guns. The roads are beginning to get worse, and the Mexicans are obsessed with speedbumps so our sturdy little Ruski is certainly being put through its paces. And we're behind schedule (surprise surprise) so we're racing to cover some ground so doing lots of hours a day. But the bike, currently (touch wood), is not complaining. We'll keep you posted!

The next article is in spanish, it was post in "El Mural" a mexican newspaper (guadalajara Jalisco) and its about u guys

"¿Y si no? Esa es la gran pregunta. Por eso es tan emocionante, es como una caja de pandora, tal vez abras algo que no querías escuchar", dijo Mike.

I'm fighting it hard - I don't speak Spanish, and it all sounds a bit scary in Mexico - but Mike is ready and raring! You should check out www.patmac.ch - two Austrians doing the same route as us on a Ural Patrol, 3 months ahead. To cross the Darien Gap, they drove 50 miles on dirt roads into the jungle, took off the sidecar, hauled both parts into canoes to cross a river to get to the port where their catamaran was taking them across the Gap. How insane! The videos are amazing! How are you, Mr Lewis? Ural running more smoothly now?

It's quite unsettling knowing there is a nudist colony right near my house. Best of luck to you guys. I'll be checking in more often, so keep it interesting.

Hi, Alanna....

Perhaps you remember me and my AA buddy Klaus. I'm very sorry we only had 5 minutes to chat at Tri-Quest. If you ever make it back to the San Francisco/San Jose area, please look me up and we'll have a longer conversation.

Best of luck to you! I intend to follow this blog so you'll likely hear from me again. When you get to Chile, there's a volcano there you want to climb, not too far south of Santiago. I can't remember where exactly, but it's a ski resort area. Further down, the Perito Moreno glacier is amazing. Those were my highlights, best as I can remember. Drinking a lot on that trip...

If you need pieces for the Ural, and it's a pretty good bet you will, you're welcome to contact me regarding shipment. If you look at my website, you'll see I deal a lot with old piles (sorry, I mean beauties) and I ship all over the world, all the time. I might have a little more experience shipping to South America than Ski, no disrespect to him. If he can get it, I'll get it TO you, certain as I can be given 3rd world postal systems.

I've read all of Mr. Gray's books. He was ahead of his time and still stays ahead of the curb.

Also, I had the opportunity to do a dating workshop with the Browns. They were a riot, and really made the men and women in the room think through some of the things we innately do wrong when dating.

Bravo, Mike and Alanna. Can't wait to see your project.

Hi Mike and Alanna,

My journey is over for now. I made it from Scranton, Pennsylvania to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. You went through here on your way south.

As I was coming into Whitehorse today I noticed an intermittent high pitched shrill grinding sound deep in the guts of the Ural, not related to engine revs. I think I have a bad transmission bearing.

Too bad, I was really enjoying the ride, about 7200 km so far and only about 1150 km to go to Anchorage.

I'm renting a truck tomorrow to make it back to Anchorage. Mickie will have to sort it out.

You are collecting a lot of serious data of late. I will be really interested in seeing the final edit of your documentary.

Oh, by the way, have your service guys check and tighten every single nut and bolt on the Ural. I had a muffler fall off near Watson Lake, BC, Canada.

Travel on,

Lester

Oh, btw, my server has been turned off by my office staff.... hmmm, inconvenient. When it is back up I'll finish the Ural travel blog and link it to you.

I'll be following with you.

Lester! So glad to hear that your own odyssey is underway now! Hope that your Ural is everything you hoped it would be. We're now in San Jose getting it serviced and there is, as natural after that many miles, quite a lot to sort out before we head south.
Hello Mike and Allana,

I know what that hot air feels like. I wear a cooling vest when in the desert.

You are going to have a lot of content for your final video. How will you edit it all? That will be another journey, I guess.

Following along with you from Dawson Creek, BC, Canada, mile O of the Alaskan Highway. Taking the Ural back to Anchorage, 5900 Km so far, only about 2300 Km left to go.

I still have to find out about those real wheel splines!

All the way to Arizona, well done. How many miles now? Or do you measure the distance by how many pusher tires used?

Tucson is one of my favorite places. Where are you crossing the border?

Picked up my Ural Patrol today from Paul. As soon as my server is back up I'll be posting too.

Wow, there is a lot here to catch up on!

Talked with Mickie about the rear wheel splines. He thinks it is due to lots of weight and hard downshifting. Mike, I haven't had a chance to call you. I am packing for the Pennsylvania and back to Alaska trip. I leave Saturday. I would like to hear from you how you fixed the splines out there in the desert.

Mickie gave me the complete maintenance once over for the Ural... and his phone number.

Love that top ten video!

Awesome clip! Extremely witty, and the scene where the Ural goes off the road was action-movie gripping! But the use of the great U2 version of 'Everlasting Love' was the cherry on the cake.

Hello Mike,
I saw from your Flickr images that you had some pusher spline problems. That sounds bad. What happened.

I am interested because I purchased a Ural Patrol 2WD. I am planning to ride it up to Alaska beginning next week. It is in Pennsylvania, about 4,800 miles away.

Have you had any other problems that I should know about?

Thanks,

Lester

Blimey. I can't see what all the fuss is about having watched your latest video. Personally I'd much rather be holed up in the August rainy season of South East London, hammering through the driving rain and cold wind on the way to (and from) work every day. It's beautiful. And raining. Again. My envy knows no bounds. Alanna, you are beautiful baby!! XXX

Together, Kwi've just roared with laughter at your video. It's the most fun Kwi've had all week. I think you going off and making an awesome documentary for us to watch back home is enough to sustain our marriage.... on the other hand huge pangs of jealousy have led to us getting out our own computers and writing you a separate message in complete silence...

It's wonderful to read and see what you've been up too. Looking forward to the next installment. Go Team GTD! I'm pleased going begins with a 'G' and not an 'S'. All love, CK.

My favourite bits of the film clip:

1. Mike's beard: that's a beatuiful ginger brush Mickey.
2. Alanna's expression when she's caught on camera munching a pack of crisps.
3. Alanna's snug-in-a-bug cosiness in the shawl.
4. The couple on the porch. I want their dog. And their porch swing. And their life.
5. The swanky GTD logo on the front of the Ural sidecar. Very pro.

All in all, completely amazing. You rock.

Huge love to you both.

hey lester! The bike has been incredible, absolutely no worries at all. It's almost like the more we drive the machine, the more it beds in to the distances we are throwing at it. The standard Ural tires have always been a weak spot, and the guys in Redmond are well aware of that, especially as there's a lot of work done on the rear tire because it's the main driver. As long as there's a good quality spare one on the back of the sidecar, then all is well. The russian tires are dirt cheap - and consequently are not likely to last. The more expensive German "Duro" tires (approx $150 a piece) really do go the distance I hear. We'll find out when we put a couple on in seattle. Keep in touch, and let us know if you pick up one of these beauties from Mickey in Anchorage!

Only 3000 km for that tire? That's only 1800 miles. 20,000 km to tip of South America. How many tires is that?

I am seriously looking at a Ural and am following your trip with interest to note the maintenance and repair issues on your travels. Hoping you have no serious mechanical problems.

matt! so good to hear from you - you are sorely missed as the official third wheel. Which on a sidecar is, as you know, essential.

keep in touch dude

HA! I was wondering when that was going to start happening. Two words: long-johns. Okay, it's a hyphenated word....but you will appreciate it. Of course, you will have to ditch them as you head South. Hope things are going well for you...been thinking about you both.

Hmmmm. Moving very very slowly at this end. I had no idea the unremitting level of work which this trip would be. Hey ho, we have a day to try and sort it out today.
Freezing to death in the sidecar! Remember that? x

Mike and Alanna,

It was a great pleasure to meet you in Anchorage as you are preparing your Ural motorcycle and sidecar for the long journey.

Best of luck to you two both for this upcoming journey and the life-long one...

Cheers!

This is so exciting. I can see the book selling millions of copies and the film will be a blockbuster. Most important of all I think you will be renewing those vows at the end of the journey. Best love. Karol

Hi again Mike & Alana, It was fun to meet you at Gottman's yesterday. Apologize in advance for using this space to contact you, but there's no email link on this site? After your question, "what is love" at the interview, to which I replied something that reflects I have no idea, I remembered that I have listened to enough music about love to know my favorite love song is (and you probably know this British musician) "what is love" by Howard Jones. That might make a great background sound track to the segment on American lovers. Safe travels! Chris & JR.

Hi Alanna

Great trailer. Just a quick question actually, who would be a good contact at Redbee re. setting up some collaborative brainstorms?

Hope this note finds you and Mike thriving.

Cheers

This venture will either result in world-beating documentary (in which case don't forget your impoverished, pensioner uncle) or prove an unmitigated disaster. For purely selfish reasons I devoutly hope that the former proves true. All best wishes and love. UR
