Thursday 24th July, Prince Rupert: made it, but have we?

  • Driven today: 609km; Total: 5396km
  • Another day of driving to get to Prince Rupert in time for ferry on Friday (as stand-bys)
  • Need to change tyre (Russian tyre on back wheel totally bald. Only lasted 3,000km. Will need to sort that if we have a hope of making it through South America where there are no Ural dealers…)
  • Very badly burnt by wind and sun. Will arrive in Patagonia looking like ethno-hag on National Geographic cover.
  • Heavens open 30 miles outside Prince Rupert. Should have bought raingear, now realize.

Only 3000 km for that tire? That’s only 1800 miles. 20,000 km to tip of South America. How many tires is that?

I am seriously looking at a Ural and am following your trip with interest to note the maintenance and repair issues on your travels. Hoping you have no serious mechanical problems.

hey lester! The bike has been incredible, absolutely no worries at all. It’s almost like the more we drive the machine, the more it beds in to the distances we are throwing at it. The standard Ural tires have always been a weak spot, and the guys in Redmond are well aware of that, especially as there’s a lot of work done on the rear tire because it’s the main driver. As long as there’s a good quality spare one on the back of the sidecar, then all is well. The russian tires are dirt cheap – and consequently are not likely to last. The more expensive German “Duro” tires (approx $150 a piece) really do go the distance I hear. We’ll find out when we put a couple on in seattle. Keep in touch, and let us know if you pick up one of these beauties from Mickey in Anchorage!

Dudes! No raingear?! Mike, you do remember black Wednesday in kentucky? With all the rain and the crying and the steamed up goggles?

I’m very pleased you’re posting now, keep it up.

    Love from the Belle.
